SEPTEMBER PROGRAM

Jaynette’s Trunk Show” by Jaynette Huff.  See Jaynette Huff at Martingale-pub.com.

This lecture/presentation has been created as a response to many requests to “see more of her own quilts.”  Jaynette will bring lots of her own quilts and designs for display and discussion.  Quilts shown will illustrate different techniques, different settings, and multiple sizes (from teeny-tiny to king size.)  Discussions and lecture materials will cover many topics, including: color, borders, materials, techniques used, tips, and more.  Allows for a great variety and opportunities for growth.

Be sure to attend and bring a friend.

Maureen Forester

WORKSHOPS

“Serenity Bay”, Sept. 8, 9 – 4 pm  $30. There are six openings in this workshop.

Paper foundation pieced landscape. This is an excellent class for those students who have a bit of experience with paper piecing, but who desire a more challenging land-scape design.  Class includes a demonstration of the “1/8th inch border.”  The finished size is   approximately 14” x 18”.

“Crazy Quilt Miniature”,  Sept. 9, 9 – 4 pm $30.  There are nine openings in this workshop.

A new class by Jaynette.  designed to introduce students to the world of miniature crazy quilts.  The class includes instruction in basic paper foundation piecing, and the students construct either a 1-block quilt or a 4-block crazy quilt.  Then the fun really starts as basic embroidery and beading techniques are taught.

If you wish to take a workshop, please call Maureen (870-491-7567) or email quiltmaur@yahoo.com and a supply list will be sent to you.

COMMUNITY QUILTS

On August 13th the following members turned in 22 baby quilts:

Jan Dawes - 2

Barb Tennison – 1

Carol Heumann – 2 Mary Ann Giesy – 2 Mary Bouras – 3

Ann Marie Oostenink - 2 Susan Berres  - 5

Barb Jaeger – 2 Carmen Tesch - 4.

Four quilts will be delivered to Serenity Women's Shelter, Twelve quilts will be delivered to Baxter County Women's Center for newborns in need and six quilts will be delivered to the Baxter County Health Dept. for babies and children to age 5.

While I checked each baby quilt for missed pins, threads and missing labels, I was so impressed with the piecing and machine quilting that you did.

Great job ladies.

Thank you to Maryann Coonley and Carmen Tesch for filling in for me at the night and day meeting. I had a wonderful time visiting with our daughter and granddaughter. We did all kinds of fun things. Playing at the lake was the best.

QUILT CONGRESS

It is hard to believe but Quilt Congress is just around the corner. This is to remind those that have not finished their challenges you have 6 weeks. The deadline for entry forms is Sept. 1st and we must have your item by Sept 10th. I need to also remind you that the donor of these textiles wanted your entry to be made only of her stuff. It was announced at Quilt Congress but I know that the sheet of paper with the guidelines said that you may add anything. That was not clearly specified and so if you have already made it and you added additional fabric, we will have a separate category for judging them. If you have any questions or concerns please email me.

We also have the Red, White and ?(any other one color) challenge. It can be any size, any technique and can be a wearable item. If you plan to do that one or know some who is, could you please email or call me so can have some ideal how many we might have. And could you use a copy of the entry form given in the guideline. I can send you or a friend a copy if you need it.  I can’t wait to see what you all created.

Thank you very much for participating in the challenge.

LET'S GO

In my pre-quilting days, when we travelled by car,

I would often get bored if we had to go far.

Since I’m now into quilting, it’s a different matter.

And my husband is happy, there is less of my chatter.

I can also enjoy all my trips in the air,

With some quilting to do any boredom is rare.

I have recently noticed most planes are designed

with the needs of the many airborne quilters in mind.

Individual lights over each quilter’s head.

Sewing tables fold down to hold scissors and thread.

There is no trip too long now.

In fact, just the reverse.

I’m secure if my quilting is packed in my purse.

NIGHT NOTES - AUG. 10, 2010

Forty members signed in.  Amber Bettenhausen came as a guest of Adele Bettenhausen.  Donna Allard brought Marti Gilbert who became a new member.

Barb Patrick had a birthday 8/22.  We all wished happy 47th anniversary to Bonnie Marr (8/2) and happy 46th Anniversary to Shirley Hamilton (8/30).

Sharon Crozier gave a wonderful program on the tools she bought and never used.  It was very informative and fun.  We all had a few laughs at ourselves, too.

Installment 7 and previous installments of the Mystery Quilt “Stargazing” were available.  If even half of the people who are taking the instructions actually make the quilt and get it finished, we’ll have a really great showing in December.

Updates and announcements were given by Sandy Steely on Volunteer Hours forms we need to fill out and Margie Dotson on the status of the Opportunity Quilt 2011.

The Name Tag Drawing was won by Linda Scott.  Pat Barry and Adele Bettenhausen won the door prizes.

Twenty-three Lotto Blocks were won by Jan Ernst.  Brianne Stiltz showed a sample of the September Lotto Block.  The pattern/instructions will be on the web site.

Barb Koenig and Linda Jirka each won 16 Fat Quarters and 20 Ugly Fat Quarters were won by Connie Randall.

Two finished UFO’s were brought in by Annie Wagar.

Judy Jensen, Carol Lewis, Betty Siebrandt and Sandy Steely brought items for Show and Tell.  I sure do enjoy seeing all the beautiful, and sometimes quirky, things members bring in to share.

The Fat Quarter for September is Civil War fabrics. Bring your “Uglies”, too.

“Dimensional Blocks” will be the program in September, thanks to Paula Winston.

Our program in October, “Great Jacket From A Sweatshirt” will be given by Beverly Spaulding.

I’m still hoping someone will say, “Yes,” to giving a program in December.  Once again, while you’re thinking about doing presentations, please think of these things:

It can be a learning experience for you.  Pick something you’ve not done before, do a little research on the web, look in books and quilt magazines.  Try those new things and share with us.

You don’t need to make a whole quilt to do a program.

Everyone at the meeting will enjoy your presentation.  They just want to learn more about quilting, too.

You’ve seen me mess up and I’ve lived through it… you will, too.

We all have busy lives, but take a little time to “share the load.”

And… we’re all at the meetings to have a good time and visit with friends.

Take care, everyone.

Margie

MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEETING - AUG. 13, 2010

President Joyce Linhoff called the meeting to order at ¬¬¬¬9:34 a.m. There were 104 members plus 2 guests present, Joyce asked the guests to introduce themselves. They were Becky Burris and Kelsey Landis.

The July 9, 2010 Day-Guild minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter and the June 2010 Treasurer’s report will be filed for audit.

Announcements:

Joyce gave a strong caution for those attending the afternoon workshop given by Carol Doak. Due to the extreme temperatures, please bring your cutting mats into the building now, to prevent them from warping.

There is an indoor garage sale that features antique quilts on display. The sale is Friday and Saturday (8/13&14th) at 1604 Johns Dr. in Mountain Home.

Don Porretto will be here with his wood crafted products next month & in November. He is depleting his stock and will take orders for any item that he doesn’t have with him.

On the back tables today, are some unusual pictures of window treatments that incorporate the use of seal intestines that look like fabric. The pictures originate in Alaska and demonstrate that every part of a seal’s body being utilized.

Joyce was pleased to announce that we finally have the 2011 Nominating Committee for next year’s Board of Directors, Officers and Committees. They are Pat Barry, Pat Seuling and Pat Collins. Please contact them, if any member wishes to nominate someone for next year’s Board.  There are a few open positions not yet filled, they are Growth and Development, 2011 Opportunity Quilt Production and Sales.

There is one other opening for 2011. It is the Vice-President Night Liaison which has been held for the past 2 years by Margie Dotson. If no one steps forward, the Bylaws allow her to continue in that position, subject to her agreement to do so.   If anyone does wish to step forward and into this position, they are welcome to do so through the Nominating Committee.

Marsha McCloskey is a lecturer and teacher that our 2011 Workshop person has been in contact with for March of 2011. She requires a $400 deposit, which is 25% of her total fee to hold the dates we want. This is the first time we have encountered a deposit requirement and we do not have it as a budgeted item for 2010. The Bylaws state that if a non-budgeted item is over $300 the amount must be approved by the Board (which it already has) and then the membership must vote to approve the item before we can issue a check to give her the deposit with the signed contract. There was discussion on whether the members could vote during this meeting; the result was a motion to ask the members approval to vote on the item today without additional notice time in the newsletter. The motion was approved, seconded and passed unanimously. Then a motion was made to vote to pay the $400 deposit, it seconded and passed unanimously to authorize payment of $400 to be sent to Marsha McCloskey for next year’s workshop.

Joyce also gave details regarding a July approval by the Board to subsidize (for one-time-only) a $7.00 refund towards the pre-admission tickets and bus fare for the Springfield Quilt show on September 24th. The intent of the subsidy was to help promote the trip and to financially assist our members who wished to attend. The details of how to refund those who have already paid the full cost has not yet been worked out and the board will provide details at a later date.

3 Door Prizes were won by:  Mary Ann Giesy, Susan Jewell and Carol Beasley.

Membership: Sandra Steely thanked all those who had turned in their forms for hours volunteered. Unfortunately, there are still many more that still need to be turned in. Please email her, telephone her or mail in the form which in this month’s newsletter and also on the website.

Community Quilts: Carmen Tesch reported on behalf of Barb Magnuson; she said 22 baby quilts had been turned in and many of them were made from the stashes of the member instead of the quilt kits that we make available to use. The quilts were paraded around the room for all to enjoy and Carmen reminded everyone that our members are welcome to donate appropriate fabrics and batting to the guild to use in the many community quilts we donate each year. An article elsewhere in the newsletter gives recognition to those who donated the quilts seen during the meeting.

2010 Quilt Challenge:  Jan Hickman called for a show of hands of those who participated in the challenge’ the theme was “time”. She instructed them to bring their creations in next month in a concealing bag so no one can get a peek before the unveiling and display during September’s meeting. .

The 2011 Opportunity Quilt: Margie Dotson said that the quilt is now approximately half finished.

2010 Mystery Quilt: The next installment is at the back table.

The 2010 Opportunity Quilt: Celine Kingsland gave us an update on:

She is passing around a sign-up sheet for volunteers to choose time slots to volunteer at the raffle table for the Baxter County Fail Sept. 15-18th.

If you need more raffle tickets to sell, they are available at the designated table and if you have any monies to turn in they can be done at any one of the meetings.

Workshops: Maureen Forster displayed samples of the quilt projects we will do during Jaynette Huff’s two workshops next month (September 8th and 9th). There are still openings for these classes.

The Block of the Month: Maureen said the next installment is available at her table in the back.

Gizmo of the Month: Julie Gumaer announced the two prize winners were Doris Rogers and Pat Seuling.

Fat Quarter Lotto:  Bonnie Landis won 21 “Sky’s the Limit” fat quarters and Marilyn Rizzardo won the 6 “Ugly” fat quarters. The fabric theme for September will consist of Civil War Reproduction fabrics and for October they will be Orange & Black. .

Bus Trips: Bonnie Ratzel announced that the Springfield Quilt Show bus trip will take place as planned. We plan to leave at 7:30 am at the Charter Bus depot on Hwy. 62 West and should be back at the depot around 6:30 p.m.  We will stop somewhere to eat on the way home and we will have lunch at the show.

Another Announcement: Susan Berres has an abundance of homespun fabrics in her collection and is willing to sell some of them. If interested contact her.

Program: Carol Doak gave all of us a lively, humorous slideshow presentation titled “One Quilter’s Journey”.  She kept us laughing and (occasionally) wiping tears of laughter throughout her marvelous presentation.

Show and Tell started with the participants of Carol Doak’s Reversible Vest workshop wearing their creations. They were followed with presentations by: Betty Pulver (2), Judy Jensen (1), Carol Lewis (4), Shirley Hamilton (3), Carolyn Adkins (1), Ginger Alexander (1), Marcia Hibbard (1), Kelsey Landis (1), Sandra Steely (1), Margaret Wilburn (2), Sharon Crozier (1), and Roxine Burch with Becky Burris (1).
