COMMUNITY QUILTS

Community Quilts is having a Sew In. It will be Sat. May 22, 2010 from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM at the James Gaston Visitor Center in Bull Shoals.  We will be making Baby Quilts and twin Size quilts for the Military and Serenity. There will be kits for baby and twin-size. If you are currently working on a Community Quilt feel free to bring it to work  on. Operation First Response  requests quilts to be no larger than 72 x 90 and Quilt of Valor would like the quilts to be at least 50 x 60 and no larger than 72 x 90. I received an E- Mail from our contact Marti Rouby from Quilts of Valor she said they had 6 quilts that were very feminine and 7 quilts that were suitable for men. She mentioned that they do not see very many women at the clinic in Little Rock.  So with that in mind we should make quilts that can be used for either sex. The Quilts of Valor Organization would  like a presentation case for the quilt.. This is a simple pillow case. I have patterns for them if you need one. You can sign up for the Sew In at the Community quilts table at our next meeting on May 14th.  This is a fun time and new members will have an opportunity to get to know fellow members in a small group atmosphere. Please sign up and join the fun.

Our Opportunity quilt will be on display and tickets available for purchase. This is a great time to show and tell about our guild. We will have some of our May quilts that were donated on display for the visitors to see. We can let the visitors know that we donate Baby quilts to The Women's Center at Baxter County Hospital, Serenity women's shelter, Baxter Co health Department. Baxter County  Sheriff and Mt. Home Police dept.  We donate to two Military Organizations, Operation First Response and Quilts of Valor.

Our pins for Community Quilts have arrived. they are the red log cabin block. You can earn a pin by making 5 Baby Quilts within a year. You earn 2 points for twin-size or larger. Each member of the Guild is asked to make one baby quilt in a year. They are so easy to make. A cute panel is the easiest. You just layer backing, batting and top, sew around the quilt leaving an opening to turn the quilt right side out, sew up the  opening and quilt or tie. This is a wonderful opportunity to practice free motion quilting. Drop your feed dogs and meander the whole top. It's fun give it a try.

Keep on Quilting.

GROW YOUR QUILTING SKILLS

Want to turn an 8” block into a 12” block?  Can’t join curved pieces without wrinkles?  Do “Y” seams give you fits?  Do you wonder what partial seams are and why anyone would use them?  The guild’s Intermediate Quilting Class will help you solve these puzzles.

We need one more student to make the class go this summer.  It meets from 1 to 4 p.m. on alternate Tuesdays beginning June 15.  There are six class sessions, and they will be in Room D at Redeemer Lutheran Church.  Instructors include Vicki Kauth, Judy Jensen and Judy Spahn.  The cost is $25 – a steal if you compare it with the price of other classes!

For more information or to sign up, contact Vicki at vpkauth@suddenlink.net or 870-421-5369.  Or look for Maureen Forster at the next guild meetings.

Night Notes – APRIL 13, 2010

Forty-three members signed in.  We had one new member to welcome (Gwen Zoch) and one guest (Michelle Vossmer, a former member).

Happy birthday wishes to Gail House (4/10) and Marge Clements (4/24).  Best wishes to all those sick and hurting.  Seems to be too much of that lately.

Annie Wagar gave us a great presentation on embellishments.  I think she inspired many members.  Thank you, Annie.  Now, if we could just get a few more people to step up to the plate!  I know there are many who could give us great presentations.

Installment 3 of the Mystery Quilt “Stargazing” was handed out and previous installments were available.

Vicki Kauth (Classes plus Workshops for Maureen Forster), Susan Berres (Programs), Diana Arikan and Celine Kingsland (2010 Opportunity Quilt Tickets), Barb Magnuson (Community Quilts, Community Quilts Sew-In and May Presentation) and Carol Beasley (President’s Block) all updated us on what’s happening in various areas.

The Name Tag Drawing was won by Connie Martin.  Donna Allard and Celine Kingsland won the regular door prizes.  Kathy Dostal, Lois Gerk, Barb Koenig and Jinny Truzinski won popcorn or pork rinds which were donated by Connie Randall.  Thanks, Connie!

Forty-four Lotto Blocks were won by Lois Gerk.  I think that’s biggest batch we’ve had.  Brianne Stiltz showed a sample of the May Lotto Block.  The pattern/instructions will be on the web site soon.

Twenty-three 30’s Fat Quarters were won by Kathy Swanson and thirteen Ugly Fat Quarters were won by Connie Martin.

One UFO was brought in by Barb Skeffington.

Barb Magnuson will be giving a presentation, “Flowers and Other Good Things”, at the May meeting. Please bring a needle, gray thread, pins and scissors. Fabric will be supplied.  Sounds as if we’ll all have fun!!!  If anyone made a wall hanging using folded flowers, please bring to show.

The Fat Quarter for May is “Latte and Cream.”  And… don’t forget the “Ugly” Fat Quarters.

The program in June will be “Triangle Techniques” by Carol Beasley.

I still have several months to fill, so if anyone has something they’d like to give a program on, let me know.

I forgot to mention in last month’s newsletter that a special thanks goes to Gail Hillyard for putting together the “Bingo Blocks” which were donated after our playing bingo at out October 2009 meeting.  It really looked great.  Make sure to look at the picture in the scrapbook on the web site.

Hoping to get my “boot” off Wednesday!!!

Take care.

Margie

DISAPPEARING ACT

Where do all my pins disappear to?

I’ve picked up all the ones off the floor.

But when I put them back into their box,

It looked as though there ought to be more.

What became of the needle I had in my hand

When I picked up the spool to thread it?

It seems to have vanished into thin air,

But that explanation I can’t credit.

How does my thimble disappear

From the basket where it was laid?

I haven’t heard it rolling ‘round on the floor

As it did when the cats with it played.

What did I do with that fabric I need

That I had just an hour ago?

I put it away, but in what place?

It’s somewhere that it doesn’t show.

The magazine with the pattern I liked

Was right on top of that pile.

I guess it’s sunk, but how far down

In such a little while?

I know that book went back on its shelf

And should be with books of its kind.

But I just can’t find it, though I’ve looked five times.

Can it be that I’m going blind?

It’s a very good thing that my sewing machine

Is something that’s too big to hide.

Not being able to find something as big as that

Would really humble my pride!

I don’t know why things I know that I had

Disappear when I put them away.

I find it annoying but I very much fear

It’s a problem that’s here to stay.
