A very special thank you to Mary Spilman who worked on this project tirelessly ( I think she has charred fingers) and baked cookies and cakes for the workers; to Sue Schaufler who provided a wonderful lunch for us, to Bonnie Marr who provided candy to give us energy, and to Kathy Park, Sonya Smith, Barbara Tennison, Sandra Steely, Kathy McClellan, and Diana Arikan who formed petals at home for us.  I just hope I didn’t forget anyone, but if I did, you are certainly appreciated!

COMMUNITY QUILTS

Fifty-six quilts were turned in at the April meetings. Six quilts were turned over to Pat Seuling for shipment to our wounded military personnel; two were kept on hand for special events later in the year; twenty went to the Women’s Center at Baxter Regional Medical Center for needy newborns; twenty were given to Serenity for families in crisis; and eight are being kept in our emergency stash. As usual, there was a great variety of sizes and techniques -- it’s always fun to process these quilts.

We are working with Redeemer Lutheran Church to reserve a small room for about four hours after a day quilt meeting, but haven’t received a confirmation yet. We will use the tops I have on hand from a previous sew-in to complete quilts and/or comforters. These are bed-size tops suitable for our emergency stash or perhaps Serenity families. They were originally meant for Katrina victims. I will communicate the date and needs when I can.

There is a bed-size Attic Window kit available for anyone who might be interested. After the top is completed, I have red flannel for the backing. Perhaps one person would like to piece and another person put the quilt sandwich together. Or it might be a good project for a small group. I’ll have it at the next meeting.

RECENT ARRIVALS!!!!

New books by Suzanne McNeill have been added to the library:  Strip Delight:

Save time and effort with color-coordinated collections of pre-cut 2½" strips known as Jelly Rolls.  You can make fabulous quilts with these simple, versatile strips!   Features mini to size quilts using strip piecing, needle turn and fusible appliqué.  Contains projects for both beginner and intermediate quilters.  Templates are included.

Charm Quilts:  Charm Squares are so popular today because they come pre-cut, color coordinated and ready to go!  Let Suzanne show you a few of the projects she’s designed just for use with these great little squares.  Contains patterns for lap to queen-sized quilts using piecing and turned edge, needle turn and fusible appliqué.

So get out your jelly rolls and charm packs and check out these books!

Programs

May 9, 2008  --  Stars Galore

Vicki Kauth and Sue Rogers will present a program on the different categories of star blocks. Members will be given a quiz when signing in for this meeting. The quiz will consist of several different star blocks and members will be asked to name the blocks. The winner will be awarded with a quilt book featuring 12 different star blocks. Don’t forget to bring your star blocks! Colors are red, dark blue and beige-tan with an unfinished size of 12 ½ “. The blocks will be used to create quilts for guild community service projects.

June 6, 2008  --  Design Inspiration from Everyday Life

Jan Krentz will help us to view our worked with an artist’s eye, and learn practical tips for color, fabric selection and design. She will share design inspiration images from ordinary sources and quilts resulting from the inspiration.

July 4th (?)  --  The Value of Value

Color value is very important in quilting. Establishing color value for a project is not always easy. Judy Spahn will be presenting this program for the guild

It’s not too late!

There are still a few seats available for the Jan Krentz workshops in June, but we have opened enrollment to other area quilt guilds so they won’t last long!

At $75 for the two-day Summer Salsa Lone Star class on Wednesday and Thursday, June 4 and 5, and $35 for the one-day Out of Africa Hunter Star class, these workshops are a bargain.  You’d pay $40 for a three-hour class with Jan at the AQS Show in Paducah.

Take a chance!  If the colors of the workshop quilts don’t appeal to you, you can make them in different colors.  And look at the techniques you’d learn!

In the Summer Salsa class, you’ll learn how to make an eight-point star lie flat, how to join those tricky diagonal seams and have them line up, how to do set-in and Y-seams and how to do paper piecing.  You’ll learn to make and use accurate templates in the Out of Africa class, and I’m willing to bet we’ll discuss other methods for making this versatile pattern.

If you’d like to take one or both classes, contact Vicki Kauth at (870) 421-5369 or at                  vpkauth@suddenlink.net. But don’t delay! Remember that members of other guilds also can enroll.

OPPORTUNITY QUILT TICKETS

We've had a great response to the 2008 opportunity quilt so far.  Great

job ladies!!!  Please pick up your ticket envelopes from me at the May

meeting.  If I need to mail them, there will be an unnecessary postage

bill.  I can also supply additional tickets.  Thank you for your continuing efforts to support our quilt guild.  Mary Spilman

ARE YOU NEEDING A DAY OUT?

Are the cold days of winter and the rainy days of early spring getting you down?  Do you need a fun trip to rev your engines?  If so how about a day trip to Batesville!  The Old Independence Regional Museum is currently having a quilt exhibit through the end of June.  And during the last of May and all of June our very own 2007 Hawaiian Orchid Opportunity Quilt will be one of the quilts on exhibit.

The Museum is located at the corner of 9th and Vine – just a few blocks off Main Street.  After you enjoy the exhibit, stop for a scrumptious lunch on Main Street where they have heavenly homemade rolls.  Then drive on down to the end of the street to Marshall’s and shop til you drop.

Now if that doesn’t cure your spring fever what will?  Museum hours are Tues.-Sat. 9:00 to 4:30 and Sunday 1:30 to 4:00.  Phone number (870) 793-2121.

QUILT CONGRESS QUILT CHALLENGE 2008

2008 Theme - “QUILTERS ON FIRE”

Do you have a favorite quilting technique that you just can’t put down long enough to fix dinner?  Do you wake up in the morning and have to skip your shower because you can’t wait to work on your latest quilting project?  Have you ever been to a class and then could hardly drive to the quilt shop fast enough to get started on a new project?  Of course you have!!  We want to know  what really sets you “on fire”, what (or who) inspires you to complete your quilting projects.

The theme is broad, allowing each quilter to interpret what it means to them.  You may use (or adapt) a commercial pattern, or make your own original design.  The quilt can be pieced, hand or machine appliqued, foundation pieced, English paper pieced, hand or machine embroidered, stained glass, one block or many, whole cloth, beaded, embellished  - and everything in between.  Let your imagination be your guide!!

The quilts will be judged by Mary Ellen Hopkins for Best Use of Theme with first, second, and third place awards.  Attendees at the Congress will vote for the selection of Viewers’ Choice award.  Great prizes will be awarded, so you won’t want to miss out on this opportunity!

Just a few guidelines:

 - One category - beginners to experienced.

 -  Perimeter cannot be greater than 120 inches.

 - Quilt can be round, square, triangle, rectangle or any other shape you can come up with that            has a perimeter not to exceed 120 inches.

 - Owner’s name must be indicated on back of quilt.

 - All quilts must be picked up at the Congress and cannot be mailed back.  Please arrange to              have your quilt picked up by someone if you are not able to attend the Congress.

Entry forms must be received NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 15, 2008 and sent to:

                                                                    Judy Jensen

                                                              73 Mandarin Court

                                                        Mountain Home, AR 72653

Quilts must be received BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 26, 2008 and OCTOBER 2, 2008.  If you are mailing your quilt, mail to Judy Jensen at the above address.  Any questions?  Contact either Diana Arikan at tyarikan@hotmail.com or Judy Jensen at judith058@centurytel.net.

Hill ‘N Hollow Quilter’s Guild

Minutes of General Meeting

April 4th, 2008

President Joanna Sarles called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m.

There were 101 members present, 3 guests, and 3 new members. New members were: Ruth Morris, Marilyn Kampen, and Mary Rogers (rejoining).

There were no General Guild meetings in February or March due to weather. The minutes of the January meeting were approved as printed. The Treasurers report was filed to audit as printed in the newsletter.

Joanna Sarles reminded members that if schools were closed then the Guild would cancel their meeting. The Guild President will contact KTLO radio station to inform them of a cancelled Guild meeting.

The General Guild meetings will start at 9:00 a.m. on a trial basis.

Meetings are the 1st Friday of the month, except for May and November when we will meet on the 2nd Friday. This year our July meeting will also be held on the 2nd Friday.

Classes:  Recent classes had to be cancelled because the 10 student minimum was not met. In the future, a specific class date will already be chosen when the class is offered.

2008 Budget and Standing Rules:  After a discussion on speaker and instructor fees and on military quilt postage, it was decided by member vote to delay Guild approval of the new Standing Rules until the May meeting.

Vicki Kauth moved to approve the 2008 Budget, Roxine Burch seconded, and the 2008 Budget was approved by the general membership.

Paducah Bus Trip:  Bonnie Ratzel reported that 41 people have paid and there were 4 openings left at $155.00 per person, plus $5.00 cash for the driver’s tip. Members will leave the Mountain Home Bus Depot at 6:30 on the morning of April 23rd, stay at the Drury Inn in Illinois that night, and will return home late on April 24th, with a dinner stop on the way home. Members should bring a backpack as rolling carts are not allowed. Contact Bonnie for signing up or for the phone number to pre-register.

Workshops:  Vicki Kauth is taking sign-ups for upcoming classes. Jan Krentz will teach two workshops in June: $75.00 for a 2-day Lone Star class and $35.00 for a 1-day Hunter’s Star class. Helen Squires will be here in September teaching a class on Quilting Patterns.

The 2008 Opportunity Quilt was presented to the Guild. The quilt is 89” x 100”, made of batik, and is pieced, appliquéd, and embroidered. It was designed by Judy Jensen and constructed by the “Bias Bunch” mini-group (members Judy Jensen, Vicki Kauth, Diana Arikan, Marlene Gwaltney, Barb Jaeger, Celine Kingsland, Sue Schaufler, Sonya Smith, Carol Lewis, Mary Spilman, Connie Randall, and Barb Tennison). Gwen Estes and Joyce Havner quilted it, and Sue Schuafler did the binding.

Mary Spilman, the ticket chair, advised that she will present pins to members who solicit $30.00 or more in donations, and that the top solicitor would get a prize. Members who make an item to be given away at events where the quilt is displayed would also get a pin.  The printer “That Print Shop” donated most of the tickets.

Community Quilts:  Baby quilts can be turned into Vicki Kauth. Sign the list to get credit.

Mary McAuliffe and Connie Lutes were honored as being original Charter Members (members for 24 years) and were presented with flowers and lifetime memberships.  Carol Lewis and Sonya Smith introduced them and listed the numerous positions they held. Mary and Connie were praised for their major contributions to the Guild and for their skills and personalities.

Programs:  Next month’s program on Star Blocks will be presented by Sue Rogers and Vicki Kauth. Members are requested to bring any kind of star block to the May meeting. It should be 12” finished (12 ½” unfinished) and dark blue and dark red or red on a beige or tan background. These blocks will be given to Community Quilts.

Upon registering at the May meeting, members will be given a quiz. They will be asked to identify photographs of Star blocks, taken from the “Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Blocks”. There will be a prize (a quilt book) for the member with the most correct answers.

2009 Quilt Show:  Margaret Weeks advised that most chair positions have been filled, except for registration and turn-in/turn back. Members interested in either job should contact her.

Communications:  Mary Carlson discussed upgrades and demonstrated the new video equipment, which includes a video camera and a laptop, using the churches’ overhead projector. She displayed the Guild’s website and demonstrated how to access and use it, and encouraged members to contact her if they had problems or suggestions.

Due to website problems, the Guild will be changing providers within the next several weeks.

Christmas Stocking:  Dianna Flughum discussed the Christmas stocking and requested donations of items. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 tickets for $5.00.

Door Prizes:  This month’s door prizes included those that were intended for the February and March meetings.

Door prize winners were:  Donna Bohaty, Marjorie Clements, Mary Dedera, Doris Dykstra, Celine Kingsland, Connie Randall, Marge Schill, Norma Smart, Robin Tanis, Barb Tennison, JoAnn Wilson, and Cindy Zeiders.

Fat Quarter Lotto:  Susan Jewel won the lotto, taking home 53 beautiful blue and yellow fat quarters.

President’s Quilt:  Connie Randall is requesting blocks for this year’s President’s Quilt. The blocks should be any kind of star, 10” finished (10 ½” unfinished) and scrappy with any colors or backgrounds, but stark white should not be used. Members should write their name and the year on their star in a visible spot. They can email Judy Spahn if they need help drafting the star block.

Marlene Gwaltney reported that there will be a quilt exhibit at the White River Historical Museum in Batesville until the end of June. This would be a good day trip for members to take on their own.

Night Meeting:  The upcoming night meeting’s program will be on Stack N’ Whack.  Beginning next month, Judy Jensen will be presenting the night meeting’s Mystery Quilt to the day meeting.

Program:  Our speaker was Joyce Laking, from Country Corner Quilt Shop in Harrison, AR. (website: www.ccquiltshop.com). Joyce presented a program on quilt block settings. She showed several beautiful quilts and explained how the blocks were put together, giving the techniques and rationale. Joyce encouraged members to use creativity and explore the infinite possibilities of setting their blocks together.  Her presentation was interesting and informative.

PICTURES -- HELP!

Items I'm trying to match the persons who showed quilts at the January day meeting with the quilts I have pictures of.  Also, for pictures I have already taken and those I will take in the future... if I mis-identify a photo, please let me know so I can correct it and if I don't have a name with the picture, please identify.  I can't put much information with the pictures on the web site, however, I'd like to have the information available with the printed pictures.  Would everyone please help me in the effort.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me with getting pictures of the "Show and Tell" items.  I really appreciate everyone's willingness to cooperate as I know it's extra work to get your things out twice at the meeting.  Also, thanks to those who help holding up the Items.
