According to the guild's Standing Rules, dues must be paid by Jan. 15 of the current year for members to be included on the active membership roster. It's easy to overlook this, especially when winter meetings are cancelled due to weather. If you haven't paid your 2011 dues, please download the membership form from the guild's website, fill it out and bring it with your check for $25 to the March meeting. It IS important for you to be paid up for the March day meeting because we have a special program. Marsha McCloskey will be presenting her lecture "Quilt Design 101." The guild's Standing Rules call for a $5 admission charge for non-members who attend such special programs. So if you've not paid your dues, you will be expected to pay the $5 non-member fee. You won't want to miss this program. Marsha has about 30 years of quilting experience to share, so come ready to learn and be inspired. She will share a lot of her quilts as she explains the "whys and wherefores" of her color and design choices. ________________________________________________________ REFRESHMENTS Thank you to all of you who brought snacks to the Jan. meeting! If you remember, we have suggested that refreshment volunteers bring their goodies on their birthday month. If you are unable to bring treats that's OK. We wish these members with a March birthday a very wonderful day! Happy birthday to Zoe Ann Gruber, Gail Hunger, Barb Jaeger, Janeth Lawson, Corinne Petty, Judy Spahn, and Carolyn Wilkins. If I forgot to include you in this birthday greeting, please let me know. Please include your birthday month on the attendance sheet when you come to the guild meeting. Linda Shute 492-6977 ________________________________________________________ PRESIDENTS BLOCK 2011 Guild President Annie Wagar has chosen Snow People for her motif. These can be whimsical, ornate, plain, embroidered, embellished, painted, pieced, appliquéd, whatever. There can be one or more snow people in each block. Remember, the snow people must keep hands and pipe smoke to themselves, so the design area will not exceed 10" square. The block you turn in will be 11 1/2" square with the 10" square design inside. Please sign the block somewhere within the 10" design. ________________________________________________________ FOR SALE: Maureen Forster is selling her class samples and quilts on her Etsy online store. Click on it to get into the store and you can see the goodies she is selling. Also she is selling her library books - email her at quiltmaur@yahoo.com and she will send you a list of the titles and authors available. ________________________________________________________ COMMUNITY QUILTS The winter weather has interfered with our ability to hold guild meetings and I hope you took the time you were snowbound at home to work on Community quilts. This year there will be a special prize that will be awarded to someone. To be eligible all you have to do is donate a qualifying quilt to Community quilts. Details will be announced at the March day meeting. To clarify the requirements for a Community quilt to qualify for credit, it must be three layers: top, batting and backing. Single layer quilts such as fleece will be accepted, but no credit will be given for them. In December we sent six quilts to Operation First Response and the guild has received a letter of thanks. The quilts that are sent to Operation First Response and to the Veteran's facility in Little Rock are a small way that the guild and we as individuals can show our thanks and honor members of the military. Both organizations have a big need for quilts so let's continue to support these organizations and the men and women who have served us and our country, and let's make the quilts that we send them the best that we can make. Seventeen quilts have been donated to the guild for distribution to the community. Some of them need to have the binding added to be complete and if you would like to volunteer to bind one or more of these quilts, please contact me. Carmen Tesch, Community Quilts Chairman _________________________________________________________ CHECK IT OUT! With our quilt show coming, does anyone need some tips on what the judges are looking for? Check out “Quilting For Show” by Karen McTavish. There is also a DVD in the book with tips on machine quilting. She covers a wide range of information that is very helpful from inspiration, preparation, ethics and more. It is very timely information for us. Bonnie Marr, Librarian _________________________________________________________ HOUSTON QUILT FESTIVAL While we are getting through this winter, its time to think about the balance due on the trip to the Houston Quilt Festival. I would like to be able to pay the total balance for this trip by September. So if you want to pay a partial or the total balance on your trip, please see me at the meetings. Also, if you don't have a roommate, come see me as I have several people looking for roommates. This trip is not closed yet, so if you have decided you would like to go with us, please come and see me, or e-mail me. I have to let the hotel know if we need more rooms than I have originally set aside. However, if you didn’t take the Quilting 101 class and are proficient in sewing a quarter inch seam and rotary cutting, you will find the techniques taught in this class useful. This four-week class emphasizes 9-patch star quilt blocks constructed with half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles and 45-degree connector corners. Additional topics covered include grain line considerations, sashings, use of cornerstones, straight and on-point settings, borders with flat piping/flange, layering, basting, and basic free-motion quilting. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays May 5, 12, 26 and June 9 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Cost to students will be $25 per person plus supplies and notions. Diana Arikan and Carol Lewis will be the instructors. You will need a sewing machine in good working order. A sample of the class project will be available at the March guild meetings. See Kathy McClellan or e-mail her at bkmac@gassville.net to sign up for the class. As always, the class fee must be paid to reserve your slot in class. _____________________________________________________________ CORRECTION The Intermediate New York Beauty class has been rescheduled to June 17. ______________________________________________________________ GENERAL MINUTES... No meeting last month due to bad weather. ____________________________________________________________ NIGHT NOTES - FEBRUARY 8, 2011 Twenty-nine members signed in for the meeting. I think weather forecast had something to do with the smaller than usual group. Happy Birthday to Gloria Kalke (2/13) and Pat Barry (2/15). Pat had her 28th wedding anniversary on 2/5. Congratulations, Pat! Twelve Lotto Blocks for January were won by Connie Martin. Fifteen Lotto Blocks for February were won by Julie Gumaer. Pat Barry gave us a demonstration on how to make the March Lotto Block. I will definitely make this one. Such a neat idea! Wonder how people come up with some of the things they do. Directions will be on the web site. Fifteen pink and white fat quarters were won by Linda Jirka and several “What Was I Thinking” fat quarters were won by Lynda Meek. Fat Quarter for March will be purple OR green OR green & purple. Two items were logged into the UFO challenge and two neat “goodies” were put in the kitty. Bring your UFO’s in next month to get in on this. Remember… bring an item worth at least $5 to put in the kitty. The door prizes were won by Julie Gumaer and Debbie Ellis. Show and Tell items were brought in by Sharon Crozier, Jan Ernst, Marty Gilbert, Julie Gumaer Barb Koenig, Connie Randall, Karen Rutledge, and Annie Wagar. I’m always amazed at how much talent we have in our guild. Hope to see everyone next month.
