COMMUNITY QUILTS

The "Sew In" is this Sat. May 22nd. from 9:00 pm - 3:00 pm at the Gaston Visitor Center in Bull Shoals. We have 17 ladies sign up to work. We will have some of the quilts that were donated this past month on display for visitors to see. We will show them how the quilts are made and tell them where we send them to.

Thanks to the ladies who donated fabric for quilt backs and piecing. We will use it for Military Quilts and twin size quilts for Serenity and Hospice House.

Our Guild member, Linda Jirka donated a beautiful patriotic wall hanging to the Little Rock Veterans Clinic. Our contact, for quilts of Valor received the wall hanging and was so happy to have a beautiful work of art at the clinic. Thank You Linda for making a difference.

We received 18 baby quilts and two twin tops that need to be quilted or tied. The four quilts for Hospice House were turned in with bindings on. They will be delivered soon.

WHAT IS HOSPITALITY?

I feel that everyone comes to Guild for the same reason; at least I have thought so. We want to have a good time and enjoy each other’s company and learn new things about our favorite thing, SEWING and making wonderful things to give to our friends and loved ones.

I have wondered why a lot of people have been missing in the last few years and have found some things out that really have hurt my heart. We have different ideas, personalities, ways of doing things and we hope that will be accepted. Sometimes we may say things that hurt other people without realizing we have done so, I’m sure that I am probably guilty of that myself. So many of us have things going on in our lives that other people are not aware of. You may be dealing with illness with yourself or a loved one or so many other things that affect us and sometimes the remarks of others can be very hurtful.

I hope that everyone that needs our friendship and our interests wants to come to our Guild. With it being such a large Guild you can’t know everyone but do hope that we will make people who come, want to come back. The Guild is important to me and I love to see everyone each month, it gives me purpose and hope others feel the same way. I feel we have a lot of neat people that come; when we have Show and Tell and see the beautiful things that people create is wonderful. The talent that is in this Guild is unbelievable; keep it going because it does inspire others to do better.

I also would like the guild members to be seriously thinking about Paducah for next year. We waited too long to sign up this year what with canceled meetings due to weather, etc. so if Paducah is something you would like to do please let me know. I'll probably start a sign up sheet in Oct/Nov.

The April 10, 2010 Guild minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter, and the April 2010 Treasurer’s report will be filed for audit.

Announcements: Annie Wagar announced:
The Quilt Show is an important source of revenue for the guild teachers, guest lecturers, classes and building rental. Therefore, our need for a volunteer to oversee the 2011 Quilt Show is a very necessary function that needs to be filled. If you are interested, please contact Joyce Linhoff or Annie Wagar.
Participation in the Arkansas Shop Hop was discussed. Among those present, Barb Jaeger won the AccuCut, Barb Magnuson won some fabric and a guest won a quilt and a gift certificate.
We are looking for a volunteer to be the 2011 Workshop Chairperson. The 2011 workshops need to be scheduled with the guest educators about this time of year. Sue Rogers volunteered: Thanks Sue!

Membership: Sandra Steely reported:
Some members have not picked up their 2010 Pink Membership Cards. They are available at the membership table.
Every effort is being made to update the membership photo gallery to include all the members who are not in the online photo gallery. Those who have not had their picture taken should meet Sandra during the break or after the meeting.

Margie Dotson gave us updates on:
Installment 4The Mystery Quilt is available at the back table. She asked that all participants be sure to mark the check-in sheet when you pick up your pattern so she can provide a more accurate count of copies needed.
Productions of Opportunity Quilt 2011:  Those who have volunteered to help sew the quilt blocks have prepackaged kits available to pick up at the back table.
Redesigning our name tags: Several possible design changes have been drafted and are located on a table in the back of the room. Members are encouraged to stop by and provide their input on this project.
Free: We received a donation of template sheets and film that is ideal for making templates. They are available on a table at the rear of the room.

The 2010 Opportunity Quilt: Celine Kingsland updated us on:
Locations where the Opportunity quilt will be displayed and raffle tickets sold.
There are a couple of openings to serve at the raffle table coming up. We need 1 more person for May 22nd at the Gaston Center Sew-in and there is one more person needed on June 5th for the booth at Gassville-In-The-Park.

Door Prizes were won by Sue Herron, Gail House, and by our newest member, Virginia Ofner.

Gizmo of the Month: Julie Gumaer announced the two winners: some cone thread for Suzanne McFarland and a sewing tin filled with goodies went to Marge Schill.

President’s Quilt Block: Connie Randall displayed many of the President’s Quilt blocks that have already been completed. She also gave a brief explanation of the meaning and purpose of this block.

Community Quilts: Barb Magnuson reported:
On April 20th, she delivered 13 quilts to the hospital and 4 more to the Sherriff’s department.
There were 5 Hospice quilts that were turned in today and are ready for delivery.
So far, there have been 65 community quilts turned in. We also have 3 military that are ready and are being held until after next week’s sew-in at the Gaston Visitors Center in Bull Shoals.
The sew-in will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23rd. You are all welcome to join us and to bring your friends.
Barb will begin to hand out the pins next month for those who have donated community quilts so far this year.
We have also received some donations of fabric (to be used for backings) and some quilt batting to use on our community quilts.
Our parade of Community quilts were from: Mary Bouras (3 baby), Carol Herrmann (1 baby), Sandra Steely (1 baby), Jan Dawes (2 twin tops), Betty Midkiff (1 baby), Norma Smart (1 baby), Mary Ann Giesy (1 baby), Diana Arikan (1 baby) and Donna Bohaty (2 baby).
Our members attending the Tuesday night meeting have also been busy. Barb reported additional quilts were donated by: Julie Gumaer (1 baby), Jan Lawson (5 baby), and Judy Jensen (1 baby). In addition to those, Bonnie Marr finished the binding on a Hospice House quilt that she made (quilted by Thus and Sew), Barb Jaeger finished the binding on one of three quilts that she made for Hospice House (quilted by Thus and Sew). Gail Hillyard and Debbie Ellis sewed the binding on 2 quilts for Hospice House (also quilted by Thus and Sew.)

Fat Quarter Lotto: Barb Tennison announced that Norma Smart and Julie Gumaer won the Fat Quarter drawings for this month. Next month, the theme for the drawing will be “bright, vibrant jewel tone colors.

Consumer Awareness: One of our Guild functions is to inform our quilters of pertinent quilting issues. Barb Tennison shared and ongoing situation she is having with one of the manufacturers who make irons. This popular and very expensive iron has a ‘pop-up’ feature and has an internal circuit board in it. It broke 6-months after purchase, was replaced and the send and third ones also failed. The manufacturer’s warranty does not honor purchases made over the internet and warranty is no valid without a purchase receipt. She also shared her discovery that warranty criteria varies greatly among manufacturers and encouraged everyone to closely examine the warranty conditions prior to any purchase.

Program: Donna Allard introduced our speaker, Grace Grame. Grace gave a stimulating trunk-show of the many quilts she had made and uses to teach quilting techniques. She related many humorous stories of her adventures in quilting as she displayed a wide variety of quilts and shared many quilting tips. Thanks for a wonderful presentation Grace.

Show and Tell items were presented by: Mary Midkiff (2), Mary Ann Giesy (1), Jean Fischer (1), Dee Rennolds (1), Shirley Hamilton (2), Debbie Ellis (1), Bonnie Landis (2) Marcia Hibbard (1), Pat Barry (2), Linda Jirka (1), and Terry Itzig (1).

One final announcement was given regarding a 1-day sale on Saturday, May 15th for 15% off at D & T Emporium in Mountain Home.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:05 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Zoe Ann Gruber
