ASU DONATION FOR $1,000
Requests have been received from a couple of Guild members for the Guild to
donate $1,000 to the Vada Sheid Community Development Center in response to the
topic of Dr. Ed Coulter’s recent
presentation to the Guild.
These requests were made known to the Board at their November 11 meeting, along
with the following information concerning the 2009 budget and By Law provision:
The 2009 budget approved by the membership did not provide for such an
expenditure, and the Guild by laws state as follows: “After the yearly budget has been approved by
the membership, any expenditure during the year that will exceed any individual
budgeted item (line item) by more than $300 must have the prior approval of the
Board of Directors and the Guild Membership.
Since it is necessary to have membership approval for the donation of $1,000,
the Board decided the membership should make the decision on such a
donation. The garage sale was scheduled
for the November meeting and we need to be out of the Family Life Center by
12:30 at the December meeting, the Board decided to have the membership discuss
this donation at the January, 2010 meeting.
Background information was given to the Board as follows:
In 2002, the Guild donated $1,000 to the Building Fund of the Friends of the
Cultural Arts Center, now known as the Ozark Regional Arts Council. Their attempt to acquire sufficient funds did
not materialize and in late August or early September, 2009 their funds were
donated to ASU for the Vada Sheid Community Development Center. For this donation they were offered the
naming opportunity for a conference room and the use of the McClure Convention
Center for one major event a year, the Dale Bumpers Exhibit Hall for art
exhibits and display of art work throughout the year, along with other walls in
the hallway outside the conference room to display art as well. For past donations made to the Friends of the
Cultural Arts Center/ Ozark Regional Arts Council, donors’ names are to be
displayed on a tree of life sculpture or another form to recognize these
contributions.
ASU met its drive to acquire $325,000 during the month of September, which was
the presentation given by Dr. Coulter at our September meeting. Therefore, the money for the chairs is
accounted for. Funds are still needed
for other amenities. Any donations made
now would go into the fund for the other amenities, although chairs are still
available for naming with a $1,000 donation because large contributors did not
use them. Example: A $50,000 donor many have only wanted his
name on one chair, not 50.
A donation for $1,000 will probably not make us a priority contender for use of
the facilities. It is too early to
determine if space would be made available for our quilt show use in excess of
the space we are presently using in the Education building at the fairgrounds. It is also still early to know whether the
cost for the use of the facilities would be more or less than the week’s rent
we paid in 2009 for the use of the Education building of $1,490, or if it will
be commensurate with the education building rent in 2011.
The Guild treasury started 2009 with $19,661.21 and it is estimated the year
will end somewhere around $19,000, so there would be funds available for such a
contribution.
The membership might prefer to spend $1,000 for other items, some of which are
listed here:
New bases for the quilt show racks---the
present cement bases are very heavy, awkward to store, and they are beginning
to disintegrate.
Black backdrops for the quilt racks:
presently we have mostly white and few black ones
A projector – we are presently renting one from the Church for $10 per
month
Please review the above information, save this copy so you can review it again
before the January Guild meeting when it will be discussed and brought to a
vote by the members.

2009 YEAR-END SUMMARY
After spending considerable time, along with Diana Arikan, in documenting the
Guild’s twenty-five year history for the DVD shown at the recent quilt show, I
thought how much easier it would have been if there had been a summary of the
year’s activities in the newsletter. I
am hopeful such a summary will become a tradition. It will make it so much
easier for the person who tries to document the next twenty-five years of Guild
history.

THANK YOU
Thanks for the pleasure of serving as your president during 2009. The cooperation of the Board, Committee
Chairmen and members has been outstanding and I appreciate your help and
support. The friendships I have gained
over the year are special and memorable. A special thank you goes to the president’s
secret pal. I understand that other
president’s have also had the support of a secret pal. Her cards and gifts always came at the time I
needed a boost and were greatly appreciated.
I wish Joyce Linhoff and her
crew the very best for 2010 and know she will enjoy the same cooperation.

TO MY DEAR FRIENDS
Just a few lines to let you know that I am home from surgery. Received test results back today and it is
cancer. Doctor wants to do another surgery around mid December and then further
treatment. (meaning radiation or chemo or both). My children are coming for
Christmas and I am fine with that but they will have to do most of the work for
me as I will probably be more tired then. The only thing I can ask is for your
prayers and strength. I hope to see you when I can and Mary can keep you
updated. Thanks for being there for me.
Love and hugs,
Roxine Burch

Hill ‘N Hollow Quilters Guild
Minutes of the General Meeting
November 13th, 2009
President Carol Lewis called the meeting to order at 9:30, with 103 members
present and 4 guests.
The Guild presented the winner of the 2009 Opportunity Quilt, Cathy Doyle, with
her beautiful quilt. She was happy and
impressed. Sandra Steely announced that
the quilt earned $7,031.00, and expressed special appreciation to Pat Barry who
made the incentive gifts.
Sandra awarded pins those who sold $30.00 or more in tickets: Roxine Burch, Betty Midkiff, Barbara Murray,
Janet Ernst, Nancy Kremsreiter, Freda Shaker, Betty Riggins, JoAnn Moore,
Gwendolyn Forster, Sandra Bowker, Carol Burdick, Jo Peterson, Sue Schaufler,
Norma Smart, Alexis Wolosz and Kathy Martin.
She awarded pins to those who worked at least 6 hours: Beverly Spaulding, Carol Lewis, Breanne
Stilz, Sharon Crozier, Pat Barry and Georgia Kalke.
Sandra awarded certificates to those who sold $100.00 or more in tickets: Mary Spilman, Terri Itzig, Janet Ernst, Jill
Risley and Margie Dotson. Margie brought
in $653.00, and was awarded a certificate for a Guild class next year from a
national teacher, and a free year’s membership.
Barbara Jaeger gave Quilt Show awards to the following: Mary Ann Mason, for viewer’s choice. Carmen Tesch, for best machine quilting. Kay Thomas, for Judges Choice. Barbara thanked everyone for their hard work
and requested that members turn in the Quilt Show evaluations that were left at
the door. Quilt Show pins will be
presented at the December meeting.
Carol Lewis commended Barbara Jaeger and Margaret Weeks, the Quilt Show
co-chairs. She also recognized the Show committee chairs: Marlene Gwaltney, Connie Randall, Pat Lovett,
Alexis Wolosz, Susan Berres, Sharon Crozier, Vicki Kauth, Maureen Forster, Ann
Mann, Linda Shute, Annie Wagar, Bonnie Marr, Barbara Ferguson, Shirley Patmore,
Margie Dotson, Sonya Smith, Kathy Dostal, Jan Hickman and Barb Carlson. She thanked Celine Kingsland for finding the
idea for Whimsical Foundations on the internet.
The financial report for the Quilt Show will be in the newsletter.
A gold-tone hoop earring was found at the Quilt Show. Jackets and a ladder were
also left there.
Barbara Ferguson reported that the silent auction brought in $575.00. Dottie Smith, Lorna Newburn (of Tennessee)
and Susan Thompson need pay for their silent auction purchases. Research may be
needed to find out how to contact them.
There are a few Quilt Show t-shirts available.
See Margie Dotson if interested.
Quilt Show CDs are available for $10.00.
See Diana Arikan.
The October minutes were approved as written in the newsletter, and the
Treasurer’s report will be filed for audit.
Margie Dotson, Jan Lawson and Jackie Hendricks won the Door Prizes. Sonya Smith
thanked Sheila Ruff for purchasing and packaging the Door Prizes.
The slate of new officers for 2010 was presented to the membership: Annie Wagar, President-elect. ZoeAnn Gruber, Secretary. Diana Arikan, Treasurer. Mary Carlson made a motion that the nominees
be elected, Susan Berres seconded, and the membership approved the
motion.
Nickie Burns and Larry Barker presented a donation for $325.00 to the Guild,
with the request that it be used to make hospice quilts labeled “In loving
memory of JoAnn Barker from her family”.
JoAnn Barker, their mother and wife, was comforted by Hill ‘N Hollow
quilts while she was in hospice. The
family hopes that their memorial donation will help create quilts that will
touch other families the way that the quilts touched their family.
Carol Lewis advised that after December’s potluck meeting, another group will
be using the hall. We should be out by 12:30.
Be sure and help clean up, and take your potluck dishes back with
you. Members should bring their “America
the Beautiful” quilts, even if they aren’t completed.
Carol advised that the proceeds from Ellie Bast’s garage sale items will be
donated to the Guild.
There are samples and information on hand-dyed silk velvet in the back for
members to see, as well as website information.
Carol Lewis announced that the Oakland/Promise Land EHC cookie sale will occur
on December 12th from 8:00-10:00 at the Oakland Community Center.
Donations are still being accepted for the Christmas Stocking.
Margaret Wilburn asked about the Guild donating $1000 to purchase a chair for
the ASUMH community center, and asked for a vote. Carol Lewis advised that the
matter will be explained in the newsletter to be voted on at the January
meeting. In 2002 the Guild donated $1000
to the Cultural Arts Center, which in turn donated to the ASUMH community
center fund. A straw vote (unofficial
vote) was taken at Margaret’s request.
There are no assurances that the new center will be available for the
Guild’s purposes, or what the size and cost will be.
Margaret Wilburn presented her small project. She demonstrated making cards and
post cards using card stock, fabric, notions and buttons. Be creative – all kinds of things can be
used.
The following donated community quilts this month: Pat Barry, Betty Bennett, Diana Arikan, Ann
Haesele, Barb Arlet, Carol Hermann, Mary Dowell, Mary Bouras, Material Girls,
Mary Ann Giesy, Laura Norma, Susan Jewll, Bonnie Marr and Mary Spilman.
Lou Hatcher and Cathy Swanson won the Fat Quarter drawing, winning 18-19
Christmas Fat Quarters each. Sissy Wells
advised that next month’s theme is “end of year clearance”, for fabric that
your want to find a new home for.
Barbara Tennison presented the Gizmos of the Month, which were bobbin holders
and rotary cutter guards to put on rulers.
Sue Schaufler and Barb Koenig were the winners.
Susan Berres reported that the Quilt Show judge was professional, consistent
and precise. She discussed the judge’s criteria and detailed how the quilts
were judged. The quality of the quilting was always examined, and the judge did
notice blue marks, smudges, threads and pet hair. Susan thanked all Judging
Room helpers.
The following presented items for Show and Tell: Mary Spilman, Maureen Forster, Sue Herron,
Marilyn Schaub, Judy Jensen, Trish Prust, Shirley Hamilton and Cindy
Zeiders.
During the break, the Guild member’s garage sale was held and members
shopped.
For the program, Mary Ann Giesy demonstrated how to make a wallet with pockets
and zippers. The wallets can be made with scraps. Carol Lewis demonstrated a Log Cabin
variation, where the block is cut and sewn back together to create an
interesting and intricate-looking pattern. Both demonstrations used the
overhead projector, and were interesting and informative.
A hanger safe was found after Tuesday’s night meeting, if anyone left it.
Carol Lewis announced that the Oklahoma City Winter Quilt Show will be held on
January 14th-16th, and the bead lady will be there to teach. See Carol for more
information.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Celine Kingsland,
Guild Secretary

Hill ‘n Hollow Quilters Guild
Night Notes
November 10, 2009
Forty-five members signed in. We wished
Happy Birthday to Betty Bennett (11/7).
Happy anniversary to Cathy & Dick Swanson for 35 years (11/23) and
Roxine & Charles Burch (11/12).
Joanne Friedland came as a guest to watch her friend, Barb Patrick, give the
program. Hope she comes again.
Sharon Crozier told us about the Heartland Quilt Network’s Opportunity
Quilt. Anyone wishing to could buy
tickets.
Susan Berres spoke about the judging at the quilt show. We had many good comments regarding the
judge. Very informative.
Sandy Steely spoke about sales of the Opportunity Quilt tickets. Everyone did a really good job. With such a short selling time, it was
amazing to learn that $7,031 was turned in from ticket sales! WOW!!!
Barb Jaeger handed out Quilt Show Evaluation forms and thanked everyone for
their help.
The November Lotto Blocks were won by Pat Seuling. Joyce Linhoff gave us information on the
December Lotto Block. It’s really cute
and I hope we’ll see many, many lotto blocks in December.
Annie Wagar won the Name Tag drawing. (I
gave her the prize at the day meeting.)
Door Prizes were won by Judy Faust and Gail House. The November Fat Quarters, “Happy Holidays”
(Thanksgiving/Christmas Prints) were won by Joyce Linhoff.
Finished UFO’s were shown by Kathy Dostal.
Ladies!!! There are many, many great items still in the kitty. Better get those UFO’s finished!!!
The program for the night was given by Barb Patrick. She showed us how to make a Fabri-gami
Purse. Really nice. Thank you, Barb.
Gail Hillyard, Ann Mann, Gail House, Connie Randall and Cathy Swanson had some
neat Show and Tell.
If you didn’t have your Half-Yard Challenge quilts finished to bring in
October, bring in December. Also, those
who did bring their items in October, bring again in December.
I haven’t seen much input on what people would like for programs next
year. If some of you don’t get busy and
give me some more ideas you might just see programs for making a turtle out of
walnut shells or making turkeys with paper cups and construction paper.
I’d also like more input as to whether you want to continue with Fat Quarters,
do charm packs (10-16-20?) or a block swap.
Mystery quilt or jackets, or small round robin.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. AND
I’d sure like to hear from some of you who would like to present a program (of
your choice or one “assigned” to you). I
would especially like some who haven’t given a presentation/program to step up
to the plate and give it a try. As
you’ve seen from the way I can stumble through a meeting… you certainly don’t
have to be perfect… just have fun!
Fat Quarter for December -- “End of the Year Clearance” -- Your Choice!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Margie
