So when Editor in Chief Naomi Ichikawa emailed to say her magazine is collecting comfort quilts for those impacted by the recent earthquake in Japan, we wanted to join the effort. QN will gather quilts from U.S. quiltmakers then forward them to Naomi and her staff, who will deliver them to those in need. Here’s how you can be part of this important worldwide response: • Send quilts of any size from baby to adult to: Dana Jones Quilters Newsletter 741 Corporate Circle, Suite A Golden, CO 80401 • Mark your box: “Quilts for Japan.” • Send quilts as soon as possible and no later than April 30, 2011. • Enclose your name, address, phone number, and email address with the quilts. ________________________________________________________ HOUSTON QUILT FESTIVAL The balance of the money owed for the Houston trip needs to be paid anytime, but must be paid in full by August. If anyone else wants to go on this trip, I need to know by the April meeting so I can make sure we have enough rooms. Also, if you don't have a roommate, come see me as I have several people looking for roommates. This trip is not closed yet, so if you have decided you would like to go with us, please come and see me, or e-mail me. I have to let the hotel know if we need more rooms than I have originally set aside. Judy Jensen and daughter ________________________________________________________ COMMUNITY QUILTS We had an amazing turn in of community quilts at the March meeting with 32 baby quilts delivered to the Women's Center and 11 quilts delivered to the Health Department following the day meeting. 8 quilts were distributed following the night meeting. Four identical kits were offered to those willing to step up to a challenge to see how differently each of the quilts would be made from the kits. The lucky quilters that stepped up to the challenge are Mary Hazel, Roxine Burch, Julie Gumaer and Marlene Gwaltney, and they will show the quilts at the June meeting. Member Carol Hermann has moved out of the area and has donated 16 quilts to the guild for the community. 12 of these quilts need to have binding applied and a hearty thanks to those that volunteered to do the work. As an incentive to make community quilts we will have a drawing at the end of the year, with the prize being a spool holder made by Don Poretto. To be entered into the drawing you must turn in a qualifying community quilt. Each quilt turned in will give you another chance at winning. We have added a number of links to websites where you can find free quilt and block patterns for your Community Quilt inspiration. Remember that Guild Standing Rules strongly encourage each member to make at least one quilt per year that will be given to the hospital, Serenity, Inc.,the Sherrif's department and other groups as deemed appropriate by the committee. Note that quilts made for the Military are part of the Community Quilt initiative. HNH provides batting, backing and quilt fabric if you would like to use it, or you can use your own fabric. You can also add fabric from your scraps to the kits, or combine two kits to make a larger quilt. Make sure that you label your quilt with an HNH label. Labels are available at the meetings, but you can print your own from the web page as well. The following individuals have turned in baby/lap quilts year to date: Diana Arikan (1), Mary Bouras (4), Kathy Dostal (5), Debra Ellis (1), Barbara Ferguson (1), Maureen Forster (2), Marlene Geveshausen (1), Mary Ann Giesy (8 ), Mary Hazel (2), Barb Jaeger (2), Bonnie Landis (3), Sharon Ludwig (5), Joyce Pavol (2), Linda Dickson-Smith (2), Carmen Tesch (2), Annie Wagar (3), Margaret Weeks (1), Carolyn Wilkins (5). Military quilts turned in: Jo Ann Moore (1), Carol Hermann (3), Material Girls (2). From the March Newsletter The winter weather has interfered with our ability to hold guild meetings and I hope you took the time you were snowbound at home to work on Community quilts. This year there will be a special prize that will be awarded to someone. To be eligible all you have to do is donate a qualifying quilt to Community quilts. Details will be announced at the March day meeting. To clarify the requirements for a Community quilt to qualify for credit, it must be three layers: top, batting and backing. Single layer quilts such as fleece will be accepted, but no credit will be given for them. In December we sent six quilts to Operation First Response and the guild has received a letter of thanks. The quilts that are sent to Operation First Response and to the Veteran's facility in Little Rock are a small way that the guild and we as individuals can show our thanks and honor members of the military. Both organizations have a big need for quilts so let's continue to support these organizations and the men and women who have served us and our country, and let's make the quilts that we send them the best that we can make. Seventeen quilts have been donated to the guild for distribution to the community. Some of them need to have the binding added to be complete and if you would like to volunteer to bind one or more of these quilts, please contact me. In addition, a former member who is moving away has donated 16 quilts. (10 of the quilts need to have the binding put on them) and she asked for volunteers. • All community quilts need to have a Guild label sewn on the back before being turned in. • Award pins for making these quilts are usually ordered each year. As a budget savings, she proposed that we consider using up the surplus pins we have on hand. After a discussion with members, the members agreed to use up the pins we have on hand before purchasing a new supply. • A beautiful wooden spool display stand (made by Don Porretto) will be a drawing prize at the end of this year. Everyone that turns in a qualified Community Quilt will have their name put in for the drawing. There will be one name submitted for each quilt turned during the 2011 year. • Carmen issued a Community Quilt Challenge. She held up 4 quilt-kits and asked for volunteers to take the material and make a Community Quilt of their choice using the material in the kits. Pat Spaeth will be here is August and will teach how to make her quilts using 5-inch charm squares. For the next 4 months, those who participate will put together 10 zip-type bags each containing a variety of 10 charm squares (5-inch square) of your choice. A table will be set aside so participants can trade with each other to build up their stash. 2011 Education Committees: • Diana Arikan and Carol Lewis will be teaching this year's Quilting 102 classes. She gave the dates and types of skills they will teach. Something new this year is that non-members who wish to take the class may do so. Pricing and detailed information are on the web site. • Sue Rogers (Workshops) asked everyone who attended Marsha McCloskey’s 2 workshops in March to stand up. Next month, we have another instructor, Mickey Depre. She will give two workshops (on April 6th and 7th) and will be our guest speaker during the April meeting. Sue displayed examples of the 2 quilts that will be taught in the workshop. There are still openings available. The 2011 Quilt Show: Linda Jirka highlighted a few areas of the upcoming show. • We will be having a silent auction and will begin accepting donations. • Barb Koenig will oversee the collection of door prizes. • Linda asked for a show of hands for those who wish to have a quilt appraised.
